10 Steps for Selling Your Car
Step 1: Gather Your Car’s Information
Step 2: Know Your Car’s True Condition
Step 3: Decide Whether to Trade-in or Sell Yourself
Step 4: Increase Your Car’s Resale Value
Step 5: Set the Asking Price for Your Car
Step 6: Create an Online Ad That Sells
Step 7: Screen Potential Buyers
Step 8: Use the Test Drive to Sell
Step 9: Negotiate the Best Price for Your Car
Step 10: Complete the Sale
Whether you’re looking to unload your car quickly or get the best offer for it, it’s smart to start with a little preparation. Kijij is here to help, with tools and information for every step of the process: from determining your car’s value to setting your asking price to getting a firm online offer.
1Gather Your Car’s Information
Many people overlook this step until the very end, but the selling process really starts with rounding up your paper work. The car’s title, service records and original sales paperwork are the big three.
Here’s why: While you may already know the basics (year, make, model, current mileage), you’ll need to know your car’s style (not just a 2003 Honda Accord, but a 2003 Honda Accord LX) along with optional features like keyless entry, a CD player, leather seats or navigation system. Options can bump up your car’s resale value, so be sure you have a complete list. If you want to see if you missed anything, check your original sales documents or the window sticker.
Finally, gather up as many maintenance receipts as you can find. “These days, regular oil changes are an even better indication of good upkeep than tune-ups,” says Dan Ingle, Kelley Blue Book’s Vice President of Vehicle Valuations and Industry Products. “If you changed your oil every 3,000-8,000 miles, in keeping with the manufacturer’s recommendations, that’s a good signal to a buyer that the car has been cared for.”
Tip:
If you don’t have your service receipts, ask your dealer, regular mechanic or oil change center if they can print a statement that summarizes your visits. This kind of information reassures a buyer that the car is in good shape, which can help you get a higher price.
Next Step 2: Know Your Car’s True Condition
You may think your car “drives like new” and shines like a baby seal, but its value will depend on its actual condition, so you’ll need to be both knowledgeable and realistic about it.
Owners tend to overestimate the value of their car, which can lead to unrealistic expectations. If you ultimately set your asking price too high, you’ll probably have more trouble selling it. Consider going to your mechanic for an assessment. He/she can identify problems with the engine, plus things you may overlook, like a broken tail light or features you don’t use.
A pre-sell inspection can be worth the investment because:
You’ll arm yourself with the information a buyer will find if they do their own inspection
A recent inspection will put buyers at ease and may even head off a buyer’s need to have the car inspected on their own
Or to get a sense of your car’s true condition on your own, start with a call to Rick at 519-455-5351

The damage from a major natural disaster can be harrowing – loss to life and limb combined with property damage, environmental, economic and psychological impact make picking up the pieces difficult. But long after the crisis ebbs, the damage lingers, becoming ever more pernicious and difficult to discern. Mold inside walls, unseen weakened structures… they all get covered up with fresh coats of paint. So, too, it is with the automobiles affected.
We first told you about these cars yesterday, but now professional photographer Doug Kuntz has agreed to share his incredible aerial images with Autoblog so we can pass them on to you, the reader. Going one better, Kuntz has given us more than twice as many images than what you saw on the Weather.com link yesterday.
The runways full of cars seen above are the four-wheeled remnants of Hurricane Sandy – but they aren’t all headed to the scrap heap. These vehicles are but part of the over $63 billion in damage brought by the late October storm, but insurers are hoping to recover some of their own damages by auctioning some of them off, parting others out, and scrapping the rest. The runways of Calverton Executive Airport on Long Island shown above are now home to 15,000 such vehicles – a sliver of an estimated 230,000 cars and trucks damaged or written-off by Sandy.
Some of the cars shown in these images will join thousands of others that will filter their way back into the used car market in some form or another. New York law dictates that complete vehicles must have their titles stamped as “flood” to alert buyers, but it’s not uncommon for that to not happen, whether born of intent to deceive or simple neglect.
Snapper Kuntz urged Autoblog to warn you, the reader, of the danger of purchasing flood-damaged cars like these, including damaged electrical and safety systems. In Sandy’s case, he didn’t just see these vehicles from the air:
“I saw some of these cars parked on the streets of Rockaway with the bags deployed. I talked with tow truck drivers and mechanics who moved these cars, and have worked on Katrina wrecked cars. The tow truck drivers confirmed the airbag deployments, and the mechanics agreed about the problems taking time to show, and be very expensive to fix, and in some cases, not worth the cost.”
Kuntz, who referred to such vehicles as “ticking time bombs,” believes strongly that all the affected vehicles should be scrapped, and he agreed to share these images with us as long as we relayed his valuable warning. We join him in urging caution when wading into the used car market at all times, but particularly following major disasters like Sandy. It can take weeks, months or even years for flood-damaged cars to reveal themselves, so get your prospective buys properly inspected. And if there’s any doubt in your mind, well, just check out the gallery above for 15,000 good reasons why walking away is usually the smart move.

We just got a great used car here at Ricky Ratchets in London Ontario . I love it when we can show all of the service records for fuel pump , struts , brakes , sensors and maintenance for the last several years . This little Sunfire GT has an economical 4 cylinder engine and a 5 speed manual transmission. The paint is a really nice shiny red . The underbody has been oil sprayed and the floors and body panels really look great . The interior is great and really looks like new as the former owner of the car was a careful retired lady and she loved her car and really misses it but an even cleaner 57000 km car . This car has only 197,000 km on it and by the looks and running condition it has many more to go . Come on down to Ricky Ratchets auto at 140 Clarke road or call 519-455-5351 .
As an added bonus I have installed a set of snow tires on this car and only if you say you have seen this posting I will include those snows but just to let you know the snows are extra on the kijiji ad .
I have a pair of 4 door , 4cylinder , automatic , Toyota Yaris cars . These cars are in London Ontario and are really clean . The under bodies are rust free . They are 2008 model years . One is silver and the other is a burgundy colour . They are each lower than 99,000 ks and can be seen at Ricky Ratchets Auto Repair in London Ontario .
I have a one family owned 50,000 k used Chevrolet Aveo . This is the up model with sunroof , a/c , power windows and a 4 cylinder automatic overdrive . The car was bought by the father and then given to his son ( whom I am his mechanic) . The body is clean with no rust and the paint is original . We just checked it over and put new tires on it for its trip to golf in the Carolina’s and since it was back we have gotten it oil sprayed and now this guy just had a chance to buy his wife’s mothers car so he got it with only 13k .
